Breeders Of Quality Purebred & Designer Breeds
We are Happy Canines, Breeders Of Quality Purebred & Designer Breeds
We all know that puppies are cute, cuddly, affectionate and playful, but this simply describes every puppy since the domestication of the canine species. What is important is the environment they are raised. Happy Canines rears puppies in a caring atmosphere with knowledge and experience.
Happy Canines is operated by Narelle and Paul. They have a combined education of four university degrees in Human and Animal Health and Agriculture as well as 35 years of living on the land as cattle breeders with extensive experience with animal husbandry. Narelle previously worked as a registered nurse for 30 years before breeding dogs.
Happy Canines was founded in 2012 on Narelle and Paul’s 2,300-acre cattle property in north-west New South Wales. Originally started as a hobby after Narelle left nursing it did not take long until Happy Canines grew, becoming one of the most recommended breeders on many social media groups, forums and by word of mouth. The majority of our puppies are sold through recommendations from our many happy customers.
Being on a large property means that space is not an issue. Our dogs have spacious yards with most bigger than the average Sydney house block! Our dogs have play equipment, sandpits, large kennels and cooling ponds in the summer. Our dogs are not referred to as a number or breed. They have names, take turns inside and enjoy the home comforts in life. Our females have their puppies in our house where they can be supervised.
Happy Canines is a member of the Pet Industry Association of Australia (PIAA) membership number BR18001660. We have an annual audit conducted by a registered veterinarian who assesses our dogs, facilities, and husbandry practises.
Our expecting females are moved into the house yard 10 days before they are due to have their puppies and stay inside at night. 7 days before they are due they remain inside both day and night, so they are adequately supervised and assisted with delivery if needed. After the puppies are born, they stay inside for a week (longer in bad weather) and are then moved out into our puppy yards. The puppy yards are within our large house yard where they are adequately supervised. Puppies have human interaction from a young age, and their kennels are fully insulated to protect them from extremes in temperature.
Our puppy yards are spacious and grassed, which is important for toilet training! Puppies have room to run and enjoy the play equipment. The mothers can have some “time out” from their puppies in the house yard with their friends for short periods during the day.
As the puppies get older, they are weaned from mum and moved into our larger yards. If you look close enough in the picture below, you can see a pug on the top of the slippery dip.
Puppies do not remain in the house as they get older. If the puppy is being rehomed to an environment where it will be an outside dog, then having them inside before rehoming can create bad habits (scratching at doors, barking, trying to barge inside) that are difficult to break. It is much easier to turn an outside dog into an inside dog than it is in reverse. Puppies that are reared on grass are easier to toilet train and have stronger immune systems than puppies raised on solid floors.
Above: One of our larger yards for our permanent residents, they are not overcrowded and have plenty of space and the clean grassed yards.
All of our parent dogs are DNA tested and selectively chosen to ensure puppies cannot develop any genetic conditions available for testing at the time of our testing procedure.
All of our puppies go to their new homes desexed (RSPCA support and encourage early desexing, and this saves you money and inconvenience down the track). Puppies are vet checked, vaccinated with the first of 3 vaccinations, microchipped, wormed, given a preventative flea treatment and treated for paralysis ticks (if you live in a paralysis tick area). You will receive the puppies first collar, 1kg of puppy biscuits (so they can be weaned onto their new food gradually) and a folder which contains all of their past and ongoing care.
Our puppies come with complimentary pet insurance and a written warranty. They are rehomed between 9 – 10 weeks. 8 weeks is the minimum legal rehoming age in New South Wales. In our opinion, eight weeks is too young. Puppies adjust to rehoming much better with an extra 2 weeks spent with their littermates. We do gradual weaning over 3 weeks, so it is not stressful when the puppies are rehomed.
We offer ongoing support with all of our puppies and follow up with new owners a week after they receive their puppy to ensure the puppy has settled in. We also offer a rehoming policy.
Inspections Welcome
We are so satisfied with the environment that we keep our dogs that we open our property for inspection to potential purchasers. You can see the environment the puppy lives and meet the puppy’s parents.
Free Delivery to Designated Meeting Places
Because of our location, we offer delivery to our designated meeting places between Baradine, Newcastle, Sydney as South as the Sutherland shire. Campbelltown and home via the Blue Mountains, Lithgow and Mudgee. We can organise transport for other areas and can fly puppies interstate (or overseas).
When our dogs reach retirement, they are desexed. Some remain with us for their retirement years, and others are rehomed by word of mouth. They only go to the best family, where they can get individual attention and care. We do not advertise on sites as “free to good home”, nor are they cast off to animal rescue groups. They remain with us until we find the perfect home and in some cases, our girls have been reunited with their offspring.
